She started Communitails in 2016 with fellow friends who saw the vital role of the human-animal bond in healing. Since then, our non-profit has developed its own programs, training, assessment, and support services to foster this bond and enhance overall well-being. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2025%2F6%2F10/About-4_WS-1749544963381.jpg) After bringing together the team and fulfilling her life’s mission, in the year 2018, Carla tragically passed away at age 31 after battling lung cancer. Her legacy lives on through Communitails. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2025%2F6%2F10/About-5_WS-1749544972228.jpg) Over the years, Communitails has continued to build its community and upgrade its services. This is the very first time AAI is being piloted at a hospital facility in the Philippines. The project responds to the urgent need to support the emotional well-being of healthcare workers facing chronic stress, burnout, and emotional fatigue, conditions that have been further intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic and sustained institutional demands. The pilot seeks to demonstrate that AAIs can serve as a low-barrier, culturally responsive wellness strategy that complements existing support systems for healthcare workers. This central question inspired **Project PAATTS,** a groundbreaking (first in the country!) research project exploring how animals can support mental health recovery for young survivors. **What is Project PAATTS?** PAATTS stands for **Pioneering Animal-Assisted Therapy for Female Adolescent Trauma Survivors in the Philippines**. Led by the **National Center for Mental Health (NCMH)** in partnership with **Communitails**, this pilot mixed-methods feasibility study evaluated the impact of incorporating therapy animals into group interventions for young adolescent survivors aged 12 to 17\. The two-year initiative, funded by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), focused on whether animal-assisted services could measurably improve key mental health indicators. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/IMG_7083-1779454079839.JPG) **Members of the Project PAATTS team (NCMH and Communitails) joined by partners from local crisis intervention shelters and DOST-PCHRD, March 2026.* **Project Objectives** The project sought to examine the effectiveness of an animal-assisted group therapy (AAT) program in decreasing symptoms of post-traumatic stress, depression, and anxiety among female adolescent survivors of abuse. We also made sure to organize a community gathering titled **“Furryship”** where the team got to know each other and where we spent time playing games and having fun. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240211_1946-1779463376033.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240211_3607-1779463375582.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240211_3676-1779463376013.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240211_3758-1779463376079.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240211_0425-1779463548603.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240211_3652-1779463556768.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240211_4038-1779463563694.jpg) The co-design process led to the development of three modules, **“Body Buddy,”** which was piloted with Aggie (handler) and Rusty (therapy dog), as well as Andrew (handler) and Hermoso (therapy dog). The participants learned about interacting with dogs, dog stressors, and parallels with human stressors and body language. Participants highlighted the importance of body mindfulness in their reflections. Participants expressed their emotions and were comforted by the therapy dogs; these interactions were the highlight of the session, along with a state of full relaxation. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240428_0776-1779462074531.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240428_1055-1779462081945.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240428_1162-1779462088469.jpg) Another module was focused on “**Safety**”. It involved creating an output representing safety using paint on canvas, introducing factors outside our control in life, and putting together anchors of safety. All the participants shared that they enjoyed the experience, including the “chaos” factor of the Yugo (therapy dog) with Bettina (handler). They shared that there are many uncontrollable things in life, but chaos can also highlight our safety anchors and people we feel safe with. The third module was “**Acceptance**”, a theme recommended during one of the meetings. The participants acknowledged matters that were difficult for them to accept, most of which were accompanied by heavy emotions. They reflected afterward that they were glad to be able to share, since these matters are rarely discussed. Ramen (therapy dog), with Niner (handler), supported the distribution of photo cards as affirmations and encouragement. The project was completed in October 2024, and we ended with a celebration, **"Paws of Hope: Celebrating Pawsitive Impact,"** of all survivors, team members, and facilitators in one big community. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/1723978369858-1779462150282.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/BD19332C-9CC1-4575-98EE-EB35AAE0632B_1_105_c-1779462487744.jpeg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/1730030135299-1779462723054.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/IMG-4f422169663d15e2a66a5f9d1074fa72-V-1779462919283.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/viber_image_2024-04-29_08-58-13-970-1779463576448.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20240428_0398-1779463597689.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/viber_image_2024-05-26_18-12-18-478-1779463613523.jpg) ### Tails for Taal: bringing animal-assisted services to the community URL: https://communitails.com/tai/ Last updated: 2026-05-22T23:06:21.000Z On January 12, 2020, Taal Volcano had a phreatic eruption, causing severe damage and casualties. As advocates of “mutual healing” and “stewardship”, Communitails organized a **post-disaster animal-assisted activity (AAA)** called the "Tails for Taal" for 103 Grade Six students of Subic Elementary School located in Agoncillo, Batangas. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/IMG_8337-1-1779466888064.jpg) The AAA was divided into 5 batches, with each of the 5 Human-Animal Teams accommodating 4 to 5 students for 10-12 minutes per batch. Results showed increased energy and participation among the students. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/88E7AF33-C4A3-4CD2-BBC8-3A3EE66DECD7-22844-000013360DC2310E-1779466901492.jpg) Previous studies suggest that the AAA may have improved the students’ ability to express and interact with others, as animals have intrinsic qualities that help “catalyze” social interactions. The AAA also alleviated the students’ traumatic stress from the eruption and helped foster a newfound compassion for human-animal bonds. ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/8AD5F809-E857-49F0-A37C-1DFBDAD1D0C7-22844-000013366D07373A-1779466812663.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/99207009-F181-4CE1-94B2-65B596AD6DBA-22844-0000133651F24269-1779466813079.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/B211D8B1-41B3-4118-9EFE-717088E281F4-22844-000013366311F1EC-1779466950845.jpg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/20200229_114636-1779466956642.jpeg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/DSC05053-2-1779466866814.jpeg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/DSC05054-2-1779466867185.jpeg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/DSC05099--1--2-1779466867067.jpeg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/DSC05120-2-1779467042779.jpeg) ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/IMG_8348-1779466995912.JPG) **Communitails Humans and Doggos* ![](https://ctails.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/content%2Fimages/2026%2F5%2F22/DSC05126-2-1779466977442.jpeg)
